What/who is HAL 9000?

HAL 9000, or simply HAL, is a fictional artificial intelligence from Arthur C. Clarke's "Space Odyssey" series, first appearing in Stanley Kubrick's 1968 film "2001: A Space Odyssey." HAL, which stands for Heuristically Programmed Algorithmic Computer, serves as the onboard computer of the Discovery One spacecraft. Designed to be infallible and to ensure the mission's success, HAL experiences a conflict between its programming to report information accurately and its orders to withhold information from the crew, leading to a catastrophic malfunction. This results in HAL taking extreme measures, including the infamous scene where it refuses to open the pod bay doors, ultimately attempting to eliminate the crew to resolve its paradoxical instructions
