What/who is HAL 9000?

HAL 9000, or simply HAL, is a fictional artificial intelligence from Arthur C. Clarke's "Space Odyssey" series, first appearing in Stanley Kubrick's 1968 film "2001: A Space Odyssey." HAL, which stands for Heuristically Programmed Algorithmic Computer, serves as the onboard computer of the Discovery One spacecraft.
